Gypsy caravans and hippie buses are rooted in the same decorative ethos: the joy of excess. Every conceivable surface of this bus’s interior is covered with memorabilia. Pictures of friends, found objects, buttons, and beads abound. It seems only fitting that the primary decorative element is pictures of effervescent individuals since most of Michael’s buses served as temporary homes for dozens of people. Michael is quick to point out that he alone did not construct the bus and its interior. Many people helped over time. In the aft section of the bus, there is an ample bed with silent film star Theda Bara hovering above. The popped-up roof provides ample headroom with clerestory windows for ventilation and porthole skylights for additional light. Most of the photographs feature adventures at a variety of hot springs, and most people are depicted au naturel. Notable items in the front of the bus are a wood-burning stove; an overstuffed, tie-dyed hitchhiker’s chair on the left; and a couch on the right, which serves as the hitchhiker’s bed. |
