This photograph, taken in Porterville, California, in 1920, depicts a very early house car. Records indicate that the vehicle, which appears to be a Pierce Arrow truck, was probably first registered in 1915. The body is undoubtedly handcrafted and was probably constructed sometime in the late teens. Befitting the motoring style of the times, the men’s and women’s garments are more than a little substantial, and thus provide a buffer against the dust and the bumps of the road. The photograph depicts three generations of a California family—Carrie E. (Hunt) Bacon, with father-in-law T. L. Bacon, Carrie’s niece, and the driver/cook. Courtesy Virginia Coffman. |
